Desert is the most difficult area for plant to grow on, however this does not mean that there are no plants that can survive in this extra dry region. This area, despite of all its sand, heat and also dryness, has their own plants that are known as the desert plants. There are many desert plants and animal varieties. There are so many of them that in fact, the desert has become the second area with the most species living in it after the rainforest. But as the rainforest has become the hope of the world for fresh air, more attention is directed toward the rainforest. The plants in the desert are:
Elephant Tree
The elephant tree is also known as the Busera Microphylla. The tree can be found in the Desert Park Region of Anza Borrego in the United States. This tree often grows on the rocky slopes as the desert in the area is mountainous. It looks like a sculpture of elephant with a really thick trunk for water storing.
Organ Pipe Cactus
This cactus can be found in some of the area of the Sonoran desert. The exact area is the western to Sonora and Mexico to the southwestern Arizona. The area is a rocy desert known as the Pitaya Dulce. This cactus has several stems that are growing from a short single trunk. The cactus has funneled shaped white flowers. These flowers open at night and then close during the day. The flowers have either pink of purple tinges on them.
Joshua Tree
The tree is known because it is the title of a popular song creates by U2. The trees are in of the genus Yucca which originates from the south western North America. They are available in the states of Nevada, Arizona, California and also in most of the Mojave Desert.
Desert Primrose
This is one of the flowering plant of the desert. They grow near the sand dunes of the desert. They have various sizes and open early in the evenings and then close during the next mid morning. That is why the plat is also known as the evening primrose.
Barrel Cactus
This is the cactus that may be easiest so spot as it has round body. It can be foud in the desert of North America. The thorny ribs are of different colors that range from red to orange as it depends on the maturity of the plant.
