Greatness often comes in small packages. This is absolutely true when talking about the cherry tomatoes. This nightshade vegetable is one of the most controversial food in the top 10 list made by the WHFoods. The list is made to share the information about the food that can be very beneficial for human health, but on the other hand, some people cannot consume them. Another food similar to the tomato is pineapple. Both are the fruits that are so healthy, but some people are allergic to them. Even though this allergic reaction may not be common, but it is there.
Tomatoes have one of the most useful mineral to help the body fight against one of the most fearsome diseases on earth, cancer. Cancer is frightening because it is one of oldest diseases available, but there is no cure to it. Of course there are ways to fight it such as the chemotherapy and a bunch medication, but they are only to help the spreading of these dangerous cells. They do not really cure the disease. Surgeries are also an alternative to take out those cancer cells, but these surgeries are not 100% effective and they are only able to help cleaning the cells from cancer. There are high possibilities that the cancer cells will return.
The cancer fighting mineral in tomatoes is called lycopene. It is said that lycopene is the substance to give the red color in tomatoes. So does it mean that to be able to enjoy the benefit of lycopene, we need to consume only the red tomatoes? After all, there are so many varieties of tomatoes, thus there are also so many color of tomatoes available. Each of the tomatoes have their own unique taste and if you happen to love one of those non red tomatoes, then does it mean that there will be no lycopene consumed?
The answer to the question above is no. Lycopene is actually a carotenoid pigment. It has been associated with the red color of the tomatoes, but it is also available in the other color tomatoes. In fact, according to a preliminary study on the field where healthy women and men were to consume those other color tomatoes, they were able to absorb the lycopene better from the other color tomatoes compared to the one with the red color. This is because the red tomatoes have different color of tomatoes than those tangerine, orange or yellow ones. And those in the red tomatoes are proven to be harder to absorb.
