According to the daughter’s owner, Kayla Walker, the journey of the Flying Tomato had started out from the family’s love of food and cuisines. This is the reason why the bar and grill has “Walker’s like to eat” slogan. But of course the passion to food comes from a long history in the family. They do not just wake up from a long night’s sleep and said that they adore food.
This passion is a trait that is passed by from one generation to another. Not only that the Walker loves food, they are also great in processing food. The ability to cook may be from the two generations before Kayla Walker as they come from Germany and they were known to be great cook. Their cooking skills were not limited to grills. In fact, they can do a full course meal, and a great one.
Apparently, the cooking ability is also passed down because the father of Kayla Walker was working for 13 years in the Black Angus and some additional years in the Pancake House as well as Cucina Cucina. Although he has a promising career in those restaurants, but he felt that he needed something more. After those long years of dedication, he decided that it was time for him to start his own business in none other than the Food and Beverage business. So, as a start, he bought a restaurant called Mama Stortini at the original location of University Place. It only takes him several years to be able to move the restaurant to a better location at the Puyallup Valley.
Afterwards, because of his success, Mr. Walker started the Flying Tomato. Later on the restaurant is known to be a place where guests can enjoy great pizza and pasta. Not only that guests love the restaurant, but it seems like critics also adore the Flying Tomato. As a result, the restaurant received Best of Western Washington from King 5’s. Not once, not twice, but three times in a row for different categories. On the first year, the Flying Tomato received its recognition as the best newcomer in the restaurant business. The second year, it received an award for the Best Italian Restaurant among the thousands Italian restaurants available. The third year, it again receives the best 5 Best Italian.
