Tomato tomato is part of the CSA. CSA is short for Community Supported Agriculture. Their popularity has grown because they have been able to provide healthy local foods and also help to support the economy of the local farm. And how does the organization do that? They sell their shares and then interested customers make a purchase on the share. This share is not like those shares for sale on the stock market, rather it is a share of membership. In return for the membership purchase, these customers will receive different seasonal products every week all through the farming season.
The farming season can be divided into two seasons, the spring/summer and fall. The Tomato Tomato Summer and Tomato Tomato Spring CSA usually begin on the May, 12th each year. The season will continue for another 15 weeks. While the Tomato Tomato fall CSA usually begins on September 8th each year, but they will not last as long as the previous season as they are only until 12 weeks.
Unlike most CSA which only has one farm, the Tomato Tomato CSA has over 15 farms. These farms are from different regions. There are the farms in Nebraska of the southeastern and there are those from the west and north. So if there are problems hitting the farms in Nebraska, the other farms from different regions will come to their aid and produce all the products needed. The different regions also ensure the availability of different products as many plants can only grow in certain areas according to the climate, soil, etc. Last year, in 2013, during the summer CSA only, the members of Tomato Tomato CSA were able to recieve as many as 44 unique products for 15 weeks.
The summer produce of the Tomato Tomato CSA are:
1. The vegetable bag: The bag contains vegetables only. The amount of the content will vary according to the harvest. But, a standard vegetable bag will contain romaine lettuce, 3 lbs of tomatoes, 2 cucumbers, 2 bell peppers, and a couple kohlrabi.
2. The vegetable plus bag: The bag contains the standard vegetable bag and an additional a dozen organiz eggs and local cheese.
3. Farm Fresh egg add on: The bag contains additional organic eggs that will be sent every two weeks.
4. Bread Add on: The bag contains a different bag every week. The bread is from the Great Harvest Bread.
5. Meat Bundle add on: The bag contains a combination of different meats, namely beef, chicken and pork.
