It is functional because it can help to become a great fence but it has the ability to bear fruit or flower that is edible for human but the deer seems to dislike these shrubs. If you are interested to grow this plant, then you will need to know that this plant does not really like hot and dry climate. So if you are living in desert area, it is unlikely that the plant will grow on your backyard. The best climate is the cool weather with average rain of 10 to 40”. That is why, you can see many of the pineapple guava shrubs growing wildly in zone 8 – 10. That is the ideal weather for them.
As for the soil, it has the ability to adapt to many different types of soils. However, it is not like a pineapple that prefers slightly acidic soil, but the pineapple guava can still grow nicely on the soil. However, the shrub would rather be in a humus rich soil with good content of water. So if you can, try to give the shrub the soil that it needs. You can also add compost to the plant to make it grow nicely, but you should avoid manure works.
Ideally the plant should be well drained, but it it quite a tolerant plant as it can survive drought or with only little water. Although the plant will survive the situation of dryness, but it is not going to produce fruit under the circumstances. So when you see that you plant is not bearing any fruit or flower, then you will need to check whether or not it receives a good amount of water. Another aspect that you would need to check is the sunlight. If it does not receive enough sunlight, then it will also suffer. But, it can still tolerate partial shade. As for pests, you do not need to worry about them because it does not seem to attract any types of pests.
