The moon cactus is a popular cactus. It is a small grafter cactus but it is so colorful. Grafting is a process that can be done to many plants, however this technique requires the gardeners to be able to take two plants that are from different species, cut some of their parts and then combine the cuts to make one plant. When the two plants of different species are compatible with each other, then they can grow as one as they bonded.
The top part of the moon cactus which is usually colorful, has a mutation. This mutation makes the top part lack of chlorophyll which can make the cactus green. This mutation area would then be in more color variation. Among the available color would be red, yellow, orange and can also be other shades of the sma color. The top part which has no chlorophyll or at least low on chlorophyll cannot live on its own when it is being seperate from the body.
The two different species that are often used for moon cactus are the Gymnocalycium mihanovichii and the hylocereus. The Gymnocalycium mihanovichii is usually at the top and the hylocereus species is the base. The moon cactus needs special care just like any other plants would be. After all, once they are grafted together, they would become a new entity with its unique needs. The moon cactus likes to live in the container but they do not like to be anywhere near the full sun. In fact, the direct sun would cause them harm and they may eventually die.
The moon cactus needs thorough watering. Afterwards, leave the plant to dry before the gardener water it again. The plant should never be over watered as the consequences would be dire. As for the fertilizer, the plant does not need the regular dose of fertilizer. After all, even the plant is a grafted one, but it is still a cactus and cactus does not usually fuss over its own maintenance. Most cacti can be so easily grown with minimum care.
Perfect for those people who want to have a very simple garden. Still, the moon cactus will thrive if it is to be fertilized once among during its growing season. The growing season would be from April to September. The moon cactus love the warm weather and temperature, so during the coldest time of the winter, it would be best if it is to be moved indoor and away from the snow.
