There are different varieties of pear trees and if you are not living in the fry western regions, you should choose the ones that are resistant to fire blight as well as those which are resistant to rootstocks. You should also plant more than one variety so that the plant can perform cross pollination to be able to produce those delicious pear fruits.
But of course, you should do your homework first to know which variety would be perfect for the other or what are the varieties that are compatible with one another. The pear tree should be planted in the soil that is fertile and well drained. It also needs to be receiving the full sun and being in the place that has good air circulation all through winter and during early spring.
The trees should be planted about 20 to 25 feet apart from each other. But if you choose one of those dwarf trees, then the distant would only be 12 to 15 feet apart. The tree can also be planted in containers and you need to make sure that you would remove it from the pot and take out any circling roots by laying the root on one side and then use shears to cut the roots. For the fertilizer, the plant needs to be given a small amount of fertilizer in the early time every year.
Do not give too much fertilizer, 1/8 pound of ammonium nitrate for a pear tree and then multiplied by the length of year that the tree has been exposed to the fertile or moderately fertile soil. This would also apply when the tree grows more than 12 inches in only one season. However, if the soil that the tree grows on already fertile, then you will need less fertilizer. On the other hand, when you see that the tree leaves are of yellowish or pale green color during the summer season, then it means you need to add more fertilizer the year afterwards.
When you grow a pear tree, you need to be ready to prune the tree regularly. However, each pruning should only be light. The pruning does not only apply to the leaves only, but also to the fruits until it leaves only 6 inches between clusters of fruit in each branch. Once the tree is mature and established, you need to water it on a regular basis. The common pests to be found in the pear tree are the fire blight, pear psylla, aphids, mites and powdery mildew.
