Each fig tree will produce as many as two large crops every year and in the meantime, they will also grow in height when they are grown on the ground. However, the tree can also be kept in containers to make great house plants. The trees have been known for thousands of years. They are so attractive and they will thrive in the climate of Mediterranean. However, the trees can also grow in the colder climates or in the other temperature if they are taken care of and have their other needs meet. However, one thing for sure, they hate the high moisture of the tropical climates.
The fig tree is also called the edible figs or the ficus carica. The proof that these trees have been around for tens of centuries are that there have been found fossilized figs that can be traced back to the year of 9400 BC and 9200 BC. This fossil which was found in the Jordan Valley has been reviewed by the Science Magazine. Moreover, even the Holy Bible mentioned about the figs. There have been notes that the Ancient Greeks as well as the Romans ate the figs as part of their diet. Nowadays, the fig fruits can also be produced into cookies such as the Fig Newton.
Even though it is common to grow the fig trees at home and in the pots, but when they are left alone on the soil, they may grow up to 50 feet in height. This would of course be among the tallest fig trees. The average ones would be about 10 to 30 feet high. Even so, the fig trees are usually growing wider than they are growing taller.
So when they reach such height, they would also be a beefy tree. The branches are succulent and they are at different shades of gray. The grey bark is quite sensitive to the excess sun so they need to be in the place where the sun is not shining so brightly. When they are under the full and direct sun too long, they will get sunburn. That is why they need to be protected with whitewash.
The leaves of the fig tree are dark green. They can grow between 5 to 10 inches long and they have five fingers. These leaves are hairy and the upper side of the leave is rougher than the bottom side. The fruit, which is not really the fruit but rather the flower, can grow to 2 inches long.
