The magnolia tree bear cones and the cones are releasing the seeds that will then become the magnolia trees. The cones are usually produced during the fall and they would litter all the area around the tree. So when you pass a magnolia tree during fall, seeing the littering cones would be a common sight. The seeds of the tree are as beautiful as its flowers.
They are bright red in color but small in shapes. A cone can consist of lots of seeds. These seeds are the delicacy for birds and squirrels. Both these animals do not have to wait for the falling seeds as they can simply jump to the branches and collect the seeds from the cones that are still growing on the branches. Besides that, the seeds can be used to grow another magnolia tree.
Growing trees require lots of patience but growing them from seeds is an art that requires practice. Even the sprouts would take months to grow. These many months would bore many growers. In addition, to grow these seeds into trees that can produce flowers would take 15 years. But if you have seen the trees that are full of magnolia flower blossoms, then you know that 15 years are the time that you will have to bear because it is just worth it to see the beautiful sight.
But the long wait can bring good result if you collect the seeds from the likes of Southern magnolia that is pretty standard and not the hybrids ones that you can buy from special cultivators. These hybrids are usually the mix between two varieties and it is bound to grow into one of the parent varieties instead of growing into the plant that you love so much.
To collect the seeds, you first need to look for the cones that are opening up. When they open, they will release the seeds, but if you cannot find the open ones, then just pick up the fresh cones and let it dry for a few days before you open them. Then scrub the seeds with paper towels so that you will be able to remove the red coating. Continue to rough up the seed surface even after the seed coat is opened. This action will remove the oil of protection. Set the seed aside for 3 to 6 months in the heat of 40 – 45 degree Fahrenheit before you plant the seeds.
