If you choose to plant a plum tree, then you need to be prepared to plant more than one tree. The plum tree requires cross pollination in order to produce the plum fruits, therefore there should be at least two plum trees at the same area. But if you do not have the space, then you can try to find the variety of plum tree that can self pollinate and therefore, bear fruit without the help of another tree. Beside this category, you also need to choose the variety that would be suitable with the location where you will be planting the tree. Make sure that both the soil and the weather are suitable with what the tree needs.
Plum trees need to have the perfect drainage system and the moderately fertile soil. It also needs the full sun so that it may thrive. Try to avoid planting the tree in the lower area where the frost may settle as they will certainly cause some damages to the plum tree. In fact, it would be better to place it on the higher part with the shelter on the top of the tree. If possible, you should place the tree facing south or west from the wind. This will help the tree to be able to produce fruits.
The plum tree can also be grown on container. However, before you move the tree to a container, you need to remove any circling roots. As for the grafted plum trees, you need to keep the area of graft union as far as one inch above the soil line when you are planting it. Then dig a hole with the depth of a few inches deeper and also wider so that the root can be spread. Set the tree on the top of the soil mound and in the center of the hole.
The plum tree needs thinning. This is important so that you can prevent the branches from breaking because of the weight of the tree. When a branch is broken, prune it back until the undamaged area of the branch. Try to cut it as natural as possible so that you can avoid leaving the stubs. The trees should be watered every week when they are young or in their first growing season. The watering will help to promote the growth of the tree. Afterwards, regularly water it as deeply as possible at the area of the soil line.
