Have you ever heard of the Pineapple Palm Tree? The Pineapple Palm Tree is also commonly known as the Canary Island date palm or the Phoenix canariensis. It is called pineapple palm tree because its trunk has quite a resemblence to a pineapple fruit. Unlike most of the other palm tree, the trunk is very fat. The pineapple palm tree is growing slowly and the height can be 40 to 60 feet.
Because of the fat trunk and unusual height, this palm tree is not suitable for most residences. After all, not many people would be lucky enough to be able to purchase an increadible size piece of land. So in reality, this is not the perfect tree for our small or regular sized backyards. However, you can see these palm tree in public areas such as parking lots or the streets.
The best way to describe the palm tree is that it has fether like fronds. The fronds are on arching stem that can grow up to 15 to 20 feet long. So you can imagine the size of it. The tree has two genders, the female and male. The female tree produces yellow and orange fruit at the size of half an inch. It looks attractive but it is not edible. Birds are the only ones that seem to eat them.
Most people already understood that those fruits are not edible and simply love to see them growing on the trees to give a popping color to the boring brown and green of the tree. The massive trunk grow upright and then droop.
Although this tree has the ability to grow until it is reaching 60 feet, but according to the University of Florida horticulturalists, but it will not reach the height fast. The tree is one of the slow growing tree. The growth rate of the tree is considered low because it will ad by 12 inches only in a year. So the palm tree will not reach its highest point until 60 years.
This is almost as old as human if not older. But of course there will be different cases for different areas as the pineapple palm tree will face different sunlight, climate and soil. The best area for the palm tree to grow is the area with lots of sun and fertile soil. The soil should also be moisture for best growth, but they can also grow perfectly in well drained soil.
