What are grow bags? They are the plastic bags used for temporary plant containers. They measure 35 x 95cm. Although their size may not be so big, but they provide sufficient space for three vegetable plants to grow. Three plants should be able to give you enough harvests for meals after meals. If you choose to grow tomatoes, then you surely will have enough tomato stock all over the summer. To make sure that the plants will yield during summer, you can actually plant the tomato plants during spring time.
The grow bags were introduced as one of the available alterative to planting vegetables, fruits and flowers instead of planting them directly into the greenhouse or the garden soil. They were traditionally used with glass and put underneath the glass. The growing bags are not equipped with permanent borders as they are supposed to be a temporary alternative. On the other hand, the lack of permanent borders can give advantages because they can be used more effectively without the borders. The lack of borders can also give another benefit to the plants because they are not going to be infected with the soil borne diseases. The uses of growing bags today are increasing because not only that they are used for growing the plants in the greenhouses, but they are also used for the outdoors too.
When you want to plant in the bags, then put in enough compost that is spread evenly. Make a hole around the lower area of the growing bag to allow water to go out and serve as a drainage when there are too much water inside. Remember that too much water can kill plants faster than too little water. You also need to cut the planting squares which are most likely to be pre marked during the production. A good tip would be that you need to cut out the shape of a long triangle when you want to plant salads.
The growing bags are suitable for many types of plants, however they are most ideal for plants without any deep roots. Once again tomatoes would make a great example. Other plants without deep root include the sweet peppers, cucumbers, chili peppers, endive, basil, lettuce, courgettes and aubergines. When your plants grow higher than 20 cm, use a stick for support. Simply stick in the cane to the soil. This frame will help to prevent the plants from falling off because they are too heavy at the top.
