Pineapple tomato... The name of two of my favorite fruits is combined and I just fell in love all over again. The Pineapple Tomato is not a pineapple. It is a tomato that has become and old American heirloom. It has the ability to embody the best characteristics of tomatoes with its double color, sweet taste, good texture, extra large size and mild flavor (just the right amount of acidic to add to the sweetness). The colors of those tomatoes are usually the combination of dark red and pink. However, you can also find those with yellow and orange colors. Well, the sweet taste of this huge tomato is said to remind those who consume it to a pineapple. This may be the reason why it is called a pineapple tomato.
The name of the species is Lycopersicon esculentum (sounds a bit like one of those Harry Potter spells to me). The outstanding flavor of those tomatoes has made them a favorite for many chefs and the abundant harvests make them the favorite of many farmers. Chefs all over the world like the tomatoes even better than the hybrid ones. They claim that the tomatoes have been able to distinguish themselves in the dish and make the dish even better in term of taste.
The pineapple tomatoes are huge and they have so many fleshes yet so little seeds. When you cut open the tomato, you will see that the inside of the fruit is not like any regular tomato. It is even called the beefsteaks. It means that they have ribbed shape flesh. A disadvantage of the ribbed shape is that many people find it so difficult to cut evenly and at the same size. These tomatoes were all over the United States for years, but somehow, despite being the favorite of the chefs, it disappeared in 2011 and suddenly was nowhere to be found.
The pineapple tomato is a plant that needs full sun and also rich soil. In addition, they also need excellent drainage. Well, to get the results of those huge and sweet tomatoes, one will need to sacrifice. The plant is a high maintenance plant. The seeds, however, can be grown indoor until they are ready to be planted on the field. In addition, you must be extra patient because although it will have an abundant fruit to be harvested, but you will have to wait longer for those fruits to ripe.
