The dark color tomatoes may not be the familiar color for most people, but they do exist. One of the darker color tomatos is the Black Krim Tomato variety. This tomato is one of the heirloom tomato varieties. Although the name is Black Krim tomato, but their color is not exactly black, although almost black. In fact, it is of dark red purplish. It is also known with the name Solanum Lycopersicum. The Black Krim was named that way because originated from an area called Krim, Russia. The area is near the Black Sea. And the color is almost black.
This heirloom tomato has quite a long vine when it is fully grown, although it cannot be considered as one of the biggest tomato plants. Once it is reaching adulthood, it will be 4 to 7 feet in average. This size can be considered to be the standard to high size but not the real high size as the high size can reach to 9 feet tall like the grape tomato plants.
The Black Krim tomato fruit is of globe shape fruit. The average fruits are about 6 to 12 ounce. In term of taste the Black Krim tomato has a unique taste that not many other varieties posses. When most tomato varieties have different level of sweet and acidic, the Black Krim has a salty flavor to the fruit. So because of the color and taste, this tomato becomes popular in the crowds of other tomato varieties.
We all know that tomatoes are the summer fruit. They only yield during summer and they love the heat of the bright sun. However, this is not the case of the Black Krim Tomato. This tomato variety has proven to be among one of the most successful crop in the colder area. A more specific study conducted by the Master Gardener Major of University of California in Half Moon Bay, California. They found out that the Black Krim Tomato and the other tree tomato varieties could survive and yield in the cold, however they need longer time to ripen.
When most tomatoes ripe in 35 – 40 days, the Black Krim require 50% longer or 70 -80 days in average. This disadvantage may be harmful for those who have the choice, meaning that you live in the areas where the weather is favorable to grow tomatoes. However for those living in the areas such as Krim, then your limited choice would only be four and among the four, only the Black Krim comes with a rich and salty taste.
