Most plants can thrive in the container as well as outside of the container. If you want to grow your own container plants, then you need to know the basic tips. Here are some caring for potted plants tips to help you grow your container plants:
Choose your pots
When you choose a pot, you need to see the bottom of the pot. Make sure that there would be at least one hole at the bottom of the pot so that the excess water can flow out freely. If you do not have the perfect drainage system and you overwater a plant, the plant will die in an instant and it is difficult to save it. You can choose whatever potting materials as long as you have the drainage. You can choose plastic, wood, clay, etc. However, the best materials would be the one made of fiberglass, plastic, and resin. They are not porous and therefore they absorb less moisture.
Choose your potting mix
Try to avoid taking soil from the garden or yard to be used for the potting mix. The garden soil may be filled with insects, fungal disease and weed seeds. Instead, buy the potting mix from the nearest garden center. Choose the one that would be the most suitable for your chosen plant.
Choose the plants
Choosing the right plants would determine the success of your potted plants. You must, however, consider the conditions of the space you have. If you are going to plant the pot under a covered porch in which the plant will only receive sun light in the mornings, then you should not grow the ones that needs 6 hours of full sun like the rose. If you do not know what to plant, ask for advice at the garden center and then describe about your exact condition. If you are still unsure of what to grow, then you can simply purchase a different plant for a different pot. See which one will thrive the best.
Prepare the pots
If you choose large containers, then make sure you place these containers in the area where you will be placing them. When filled and watered, these large containers would be very heavy and therefore you will have a hard time moving them. During the preparation of the pots, you will also need to put a shard of broken pot over the hole at the bottom or a basket type coffee filter. This will prevent the potting mix to be released from the hole with the excess water.
