The pineapple lilies are one of those deciduous bulb plants. It has the ability to grow up to 2 or 3 feet tall and to 2 feet in width. The leaves are small, while the inflorescence looks like a long spiky stem. The inflorescence rises on top of the strap like, wide and glossy leaves. Not only flowers and leaves, the plant also produces fruits at the shape of triangle like.
Among the pineapple lilies, there are special kinds that are more attractive for many people, they are the Sparkling Burgundy, The Tugela Ruby and the Can Can. The focal point of the Sparkling Burgundy is the fact that the leaves of this plant will stay purple for up to two months. On the other hand, the Tugela Ruby receives its name because it has dark foliage, like the Sparkling Burgundy but larger. The Can Can is the smallest among the pineapple lilies because it will only grow to maximum a foot and it has pleated leaves.
This flower can grow in several different climates. One of those climates include zone 8 to 10 of the plant hardiness zones. The plant needs enough water so that the soil should always be moist because it comes from a damp area. But as the types of soil, it is not so picky. It can adapt easily to different soil types and is resistant to pests. As it is from the southern parts of Africa, it needs full sun or at least partial shade. This is a must and without it, the pineapple lilies will refuse to grow.
